The Italian Front

ITALY'S PART

The Ttalian's fought against the Austrians for the majority of the war.
On both sides everyone was being slaughtered, to make matters worse
the majority of the battle were fought in the alps. Earlier before the war
Italy was part of the triple alliance whitch sided with Germany and Austria
-Hungry. Right before the war started Italy switched sides and joined what
was the triple Entente and now the allies. The Italians were looking to get
more land out of the war, but by the war the italians were left out of the Treaty
of Versailles and gained very little land and respect from the war. The goal for the italians was to take back italian speaking reigons in Austria-Hungry.

The Isonzo River, Italy's priority.

A series of battles happened here, twelve total. The battles were fought along both sides of the river on the more eastern part of the front. the river ran Luigi Cadornaalong the austrian italian border which was flanked by mountains fortified with forts and austrian troops long before the italians entered the war. The italian chief of staff Luigi Cadorna belived going further north would bypass the mountains on either side of the river and attack the austrians from the behind. to cary out this plan he had to be aware of the flooding of the Isonzo and find and knock out the mountain whatchmen that would warn the other austrians. In order to secure the river the italians needed to cross it before they could get the mountains, the troops did all but well in the battle. the mass battles brought half of the italian casualities 300,000-600,000 (1.2 million total)
