Battle of Caporetto (The Disaster)

This fight consisted of the Italians against Austro-German forces. The central powers broke through the lines catching Italy completely off guard. By great numbers in defeat the Italians made drastic changes in the government and military command. Chief of staff Luigi Cadorna was successful in hurting the Austrians forces. A combined operation by the central powers was launched against italy in September 1917. Luigi wanted to counter attack the Austrians at the Isonzo river but under estimated the strength of the combined forces. The Power's pressed the attack on the isonzo river. The Italians out numbered the Powers but the point of attack that was chosen was Italy's weakest point. The local commander at the time chose to flank to the south and ended up leaving an opening. the Powers charged with Gas, grenades, flamethrowers, and artillery broke through almost instantly. the Austrians broke through and cut off the bulk off Italian forces. when the Power's supply lines were stretched to the limit Cadorna took advantage and stopped the Central powers from a fresh offensive. The disaster caused the government to change many things with their army, but the Italians chose to keep fighting.
